The Artist Series

An Insight Into the Hearts and Minds of Kansas City Artists

by Jennifer Kirby

I am thrilled to share this passion project with you. It’s a growing collaboration among artists and galleries in the Kansas City area to get a closer look at the lives of KC artists.

The first video was produced in November 2025 - featuring multi-medium artist Julie Koch.

Full transparency here…going into the filming of the video, I had a vague idea of what I wanted to produce. It was important to me to show the artist in their environment and to talk more about their journey than their process. I learned a lot through this experience and was deeply encouraged by Julie. I did not; however, really know what I was going to do in the “editing room.”

As I filmed, I was captivated by the details and soft, dramatic light in her workspace. My natural tendency is to capture close details with the same excellence I would in my photography. My favorite films are photography in motion. That is my goal as I improve my work in this video series.

After having produced this first video, I quickly lined up my second shoot. Actually, I may have targeted Pat Cain as the next artist before the editing of Julie’s video was complete. I have been a fan of Pat’s work since the moment I laid eyes on it - truly love at first sight. Luckily, she agreed to participate in the video. It is thrilling to begin this second video with a clear vision.

Pat’s video was filmed November 4, 2025. I will step into editing the week of December 15th.

Truly, truly…I cannot wait to share it with you! The lighting and colors in her studio as well as her magnetic personality are a beautiful backdrop to the warmth and depth of her journey.

Stay tuned!
